Acid dyes are a water soluble class of dyes with anionic properties. These textile acid dyes are very effective for protein fibers such as wool, nylon, silk, and modified acrylics. Acid dyes are fixed to the fibers by hydrogen bonding, Vander Waals forces and ionic linkages.

Properties of Acid dyes:

• Since Acid dyes are sold as a sodium salt, therefore these form a large anion in the aqueous medium.
• Acid dyes are anionic in nature.
• Acid dyes are suitable for wool, silk, polyamide and modified acrylics.
• Acid dyes are applied from a strongly acidic to neutral pH bath.
• Acid dyes have no affinity for cotton cellulose, hence not suitable for cellulose.
