Disperse dyes are a class of non-ionic dyes with low water solubility. They are generally available in powder form, prepared by milling the press cake with an appropriate weight of auxiliary chemicals and water, then drying, and mixing with suitable diluents. This process results in a dye product containing 15–40% dye. The particles have a very fine size (≈1 μm), providing a large surface area that aids in dissolution and allows uptake by the fiber. The dyeing rate varies considerably according to the choice of dispersing agent used during the grinding process.
Disperse dyes are derivatives of azo, quinine anthraquinone, nitro groups. The chemical structure of most dyes are single azo class or mono azo class type, accounting for around 80% of all the dispersed dyes. Anthraquinone are about 15%, all other structures are about 5%. Disperse dyes are organic substances which are free of ionizing groups.
Disperse dyes are non-soluble in water and in nature and a dispersing agent is needed for the dyeing process. As fastness properties especially light fastness and wet fastness are good to excellent they are widely used for dyeing synthetic fibers. Their dyeing process is carried out in high temperature and molecular size is smaller than other dyes.
Disperse dyes are mainly used for dyeing fabric of polyester yarn. Due to their chemical properties detailed above, disperse dyes are usually used for colouring synthetic fibers such as nylon, acrylic, polyester, and acetate rayon.
Most types of polyester fabric lack ionic properties and are hydrophobic, which makes them very difficult to colour with other than disperse dyes. Disperse dyes are also used to dye resins and plastics for surface and general colouring uses.
